Bright Steps · Parent Reset Help
Mama, I’m losing it. Help me reset.
You are not a bad parent. This is a hard moment, not the whole story.
You do not need to feel calm before you start. Just take the first step.
If you might hurt yourself or someone else, put space between you and your child. Call 911 for immediate danger, or call or text 988 in the US for crisis support.
Not the parent? Still the one doing the caring?
Grandparent, aunt, uncle, sibling, foster parent, or adult child caring for a parent — this reset works for you too, in your words.

For when you feel close to losing it. Just follow along.
Your reset, one step at a time
Step 1 · Make space
If everyone is safe, step back for a moment. Put your child somewhere safe. Say, ‘I need a minute. I’m coming back.’
Step 2 · Let your body slow down
Put both feet on the floor. Drop your shoulders. Breathe out slowly three times. You do not have to solve everything now.
Step 3 · Choose one small thing
Get water. Ask someone you trust to take over for ten minutes. Or say, ‘We can try again when we’re ready.’
One hard moment does not erase all the times you showed up for your child.
When you’re ready to reconnect
Wait until you and your child feel safer. There is no rush.
- Step 1 · I Do: You model it. Say, “I needed a minute. I’m here now.”
- Step 2 · We Do: Practice together. Offer water, quiet, or a breath together.
- Step 3 · You Do: Let your child choose what helps next. Stay close if they want you there.
You can repair a hard moment. You are still the parent your child needs.
Gentle confidence check-in
Two minutes. Just for you.
Step 2 · Which thought is loud right now?
