After-School Meltdowns

The After-School Crash Out: Why It Happens at Home

They held it together all day. Then they fall apart at your door.

Step 1. What's happening

School says they were fine. But the minute they get home, they scream, cry, or slam doors.

This is very common. It does not mean you are doing something wrong.

Step 2. Behavior clues

  • They used all their energy holding it in at school.
  • Home is where they feel safe enough to let go.
  • Hunger, noise, and lights can pile up.

Step 3. Watch before you react

Watch for one week: 1. How long after pickup does it start? 2. Did they eat? 3. What questions did you ask right away?

Step 4. STOP → BREATHE → SAY WHAT THEY NEED

  1. STOP. Hold the questions about their day.
  2. BREATHE. Slow breath. Lower your voice.
  3. SAY WHAT THEY NEED: "You had a long day. Snack and quiet first."

Step 5. I DO → WE DO → YOU DO

  1. I DO: Show a calm-down spot and use it yourself.
  2. WE DO: Sit there together for 5 minutes.
  3. YOU DO: They choose the spot on their own.

Step 6. Try this tonight

  • Have a snack ready in the car.
  • Give 20 quiet minutes before homework.
  • Ask about school later, at dinner.
