Bedtime Battles
Bedtime Battles That Last for Hours
One more drink. One more hug. And now it is 10 p.m.
Step 1. What's happening
You are tired. They are wired. Bedtime keeps getting later and everyone is upset.
Step 2. Behavior clues
- Their body may not feel sleepy yet.
- Being alone in the dark can feel scary.
- Screens can keep the brain busy.
Step 3. Watch before you react
Watch for 3 nights: 1. What time do the stalls start? 2. What do they ask for most? 3. What happened in the hour before bed?
Step 4. STOP → BREATHE → SAY WHAT THEY NEED
- STOP. Do not argue about the next request.
- BREATHE. Slow breath. Calm voice.
- SAY WHAT THEY NEED: "You want me close. I will check on you in 5 minutes."
Step 5. I DO → WE DO → YOU DO
- I DO: Show the bedtime steps on a picture chart.
- WE DO: Do the steps together each night.
- YOU DO: They lead the steps and you watch.
Step 6. Try this tonight
- Screens off 1 hour before bed.
- Same 3 steps every night.
- Give 2 "free passes" for one more request.
