Day 7 — I Almost Lost My Patience
To every tired parent and caregiver: there's room for compassion tonight.
A kind word for tonight
My voice was getting sharper, and I felt my shoulders rise. My child was getting louder; I could see it in their eyes. We both were getting overwhelmed, and neither one felt heard. A gentle pause could help us before saying one more word.
Before we stress, let's assess
Before we stress, let's assess. Calming your own body can help you respond more safely and clearly.
Step 1. Tonight’s reset
STOP: pause.
BREATHE: slow it down.
SAY WHAT THEY NEED: "I need a breath. Then I'll help you."
Step 2. I DO → WE DO → YOU DO
I DO: model it.
WE DO: practice together.
YOU DO: try with support.
Step 3. One small action
Practice a short pause before your next response.
Tomorrow, we can practice again. Spot the clue. Know what to do. We made it through the day.
