Communication for Aggression

A big feeling may have reached the body before words were ready.

Step 1 — Spot the clue

Your child may be saying:

  • “This feels unsafe.”
  • “I need more space.”
  • “I cannot handle one more thing.”

Step 2 — Stop. Breathe. Say what you need.

  1. 1. Stop: Move other people and hard objects away. Use few words.
  2. 2. Breathe: Keep a safe distance. Take one slow breath where your child can see it.
  3. 3. Say what you need: Offer one line below.

Adult says

  • “I am keeping everyone safe.”
  • “I will give you space.”
  • “We will talk when your body is calm.”

Child can say

  • “Back up, please.”
  • “I need space.”
  • “This is too much.”

Step 3 — Practice when calm

  1. 1. I Do — Parent models: Model one line: “I need space.” Step back while you say it.
  2. 2. We Do — Practice together: Practice saying the line together when everyone is calm.
  3. 3. You Do — Child tries: Your child says the line and moves to their safe spot.

How you use it

  1. Step 1 — Open tonight's kit: Pick the struggle you are in right now. Read the script out loud. Relief in about 10 minutes.
  2. Step 2 — Print the calm cards: Put them on the fridge and in your bag so anyone with your child knows the same 3 steps.
  3. Step 3 — Log what you saw: One line a day on the log page. In a week you can see the pattern behind the behavior.
  4. Step 4 — Hand the school the plan: Print the school summary and the letter. You walk in with facts, not a story.

How this solves your problem: the yelling and the meltdowns keep repeating because no one has named the clue behind them. The Map names the clue, gives you the words for the moment, and turns what happens at home into the documented plan the school will act on.
