Week 2

Behavior Is Information

Stop seeing 'bad behavior.' Start seeing unmet needs.

Essential question

What is my child's behavior actually telling me?

Learning objectives

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  1. Use the Trigger → Behavior → Need translator on 3 real moments.
  2. Distinguish sensory vs. emotional vs. skill-deficit behavior.
  3. Reframe one 'defiant' moment as a need.

Key vocabulary

Antecedent
What happened RIGHT before the behavior.
Function
The need the behavior is trying to meet.
I Do · Watch · 12 min

I model translating 3 real 'bad behavior' moments into the unmet need underneath using the Trigger → Behavior → Need framework.

Lesson script beats
  • Open (0:00–0:45): 'Last week we named the storm. This week we learn to read it. Behavior is not the problem — behavior is the message.'
  • Teach the frame (0:45–2:30): Trigger (what happened RIGHT before) → Behavior (what we saw) → Need (sensory, emotional, or skill).
  • I Do — Moment 1 (2:30–5:00): 'Refuses to put on shoes.' Trigger: transition. Behavior: drops to floor. Need: prep time + control. Reframe out loud.
  • I Do — Moment 2 (5:00–7:00): 'Hits sibling.' Trigger: sibling took toy without warning. Behavior: hit. Need: a script + a fair turn system.
  • I Do — Moment 3 (7:00–9:00): 'Won't do homework.' Trigger: tired + hungry after school. Behavior: melts down. Need: snack + 20 min reset, not consequence.
  • We Do (9:00–10:30): 'Drop ONE moment in chat. I'll translate it live with you.'
  • You Do (10:30–11:30): Walk through the 3-question Behavior Helper homework. Reinforce: 'You're not excusing the behavior — you're decoding it.'
  • Close (11:30–12:00): Disclaimer + 'See you Wednesday for Hard Moment Wednesday.'
