Long Lines & Waiting

Waiting is a skill their brain hasn't built yet. Don't expect it — plan around it.

Step 1 — Before you go

  1. 1Ask about disability access passes (Disney DAS, Universal AAP, aquarium quiet-line, etc.) — request in advance.
  2. 2Download a game or show that ONLY comes out in lines.
  3. 3Bring a chewy, a fidget, and a cold water bottle.
  4. 4Look up wait times before you get in line — decide together if it's worth it.

Step 2 — During the moment

  1. 1Give them a job: count the tiles, spot every red hat, find the letter B.
  2. 2Physical input helps: press palms together, push against the wall, big deep breaths.
  3. 3Narrate the wait: "3 more turns until us. Then 2. Then 1."
  4. 4If the line is going to break them, LEAVE THE LINE. It's not worth the meltdown.

Safety protectors — what to watch for

  1. 1Never let go of their hand in a crowded line.
  2. 2Point out staff/security when you enter the line — "if we get separated, find one of them."
  3. 3Watch for strangers standing too close or filming your child.
  4. 4Heat exhaustion sneaks up in outdoor lines — hat, shade, water every 15 min.

Red flags — act now

  1. 1Child says "I can't" and their body goes limp = nervous system is done. Leave.
  2. 2Sudden pale, sweaty, glassy-eyed = get out of the sun NOW.
  3. 3Any stranger tries to touch, photograph, or separate your child. Loud voice, staff, done.

Say this out loud

""I see this line is hard. You have two choices: hold my hand and count the red shirts with me, or we step out and try again later. Both are okay.""

In a crisis, call or text 988 (US Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or your local emergency line. For a lost child in a public venue: find the nearest staff badge and give your child's photo and today's outfit.
