Day 16 — The After-School Crash
Worn out tonight? This one's for the caregiver who needs a little hope.
A kind word for tonight
All day they held their feelings while they tried to make it through. Then walking through our doorway, every feeling spilled anew. I wanted to ask questions and get homework underway. But maybe quiet and a snack could help reset the day.
Before we stress, let's assess
Before we stress, let's assess. After-school demands can be difficult when a child is depleted.
Step 1. Tonight’s reset
STOP: pause.
BREATHE: slow it down.
SAY WHAT THEY NEED: "You can have a break before we talk."
Step 2. I DO → WE DO → YOU DO
I DO: model it.
WE DO: practice together.
YOU DO: try with support.
Step 3. One small action
Offer an undemanding transition after school.
Tomorrow, we can practice again. Spot the clue. Know what to do. We made it through the day.
