Caregiver Motivation
My Child’s Behavior Is Triggering Me
Can we say something people don’t always want to admit?
Step 1. What's happening
Caregiver…
Can we say something people don’t always want to admit?
Sometimes your child’s behavior gets on your LAST nerve.
The whining.
Arguing.
Repeating.
Screaming.
Moving slowly when you’re already late.
And sometimes your body reacts before your brain catches up.
Step 2. Behavior clues
Proverbs 16:32 KJV says:
“He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty.”
Being slow to anger doesn’t mean you never get angry.
It means anger doesn’t have to drive.
Step 3. Watch before you react
- NAME IT
Ask:
“What behavior gets me worked up fastest?”
- NOTICE IT
What happens in your body?
Jaw tight?
Heart racing?
Voice getting louder?
That’s your clue.
- PREPARE
Have one sentence ready:
“I’m getting frustrated. Give me a minute.”
Step 4. STOP → BREATHE → SAY WHAT THEY NEED
STOP — Pause before you react.
BREATHE — One slow breath. Count to five.
SAY — “I’m going to take a minute, then try again.”
Step 5. I DO → WE DO → YOU DO
- I Do — Show it first: model “Name It” out loud so your family can see it.
- We Do — Practice “Notice It” together in a calm moment.
- You Do — Try “Prepare” on your own today. Notice what changes.
Step 6. Try this tonight
- Today, practice: Name It.
- Today, practice: Notice It.
- Today, practice: Prepare.
Caregiver…
Understanding your trigger doesn’t mean the behavior is okay.
It means you’re preparing yourself to respond instead of explode.
Read their clues.
But read yours too.
💜 Before we stress, let’s assess.
