Communication for Biting
Teeth may act when words are too slow, space feels small, or the mouth needs input.
Step 1 — Spot the clue
Your child may be saying:
- “Move away.”
- “That is mine.”
- “My mouth needs safe pressure.”
Step 2 — Stop. Breathe. Say what you need.
- 1. Stop: Create space. Comfort the child who was bitten first.
- 2. Breathe: Use a flat, quiet voice. Keep the message short.
- 3. Say what you need: Offer one line below.
Adult says
- “Biting hurts.”
- “Say, ‘Move back.’”
- “You may bite this safe chew, not people.”
Child can say
- “Move back.”
- “My turn.”
- “I need my chew.”
Step 3 — Practice when calm
- 1. I Do — Parent models: Model a firm hand signal and say, “Move back.”
- 2. We Do — Practice together: Practice asking for space with a toy between you.
- 3. You Do — Child tries: Your child uses the signal, words, or a safe chew.
