Communication for Hitting
Hands may move before your child can name anger, unfairness, or overload.
Step 1 — Spot the clue
Your child may be saying:
- “Stop.”
- “That felt unfair.”
- “I need help before I lose control.”
Step 2 — Stop. Breathe. Say what you need.
- 1. Stop: Block without grabbing when you can. Move people to safety.
- 2. Breathe: Lower your voice. Give the body time before adding words.
- 3. Say what you need: Offer one line below.
Adult says
- “I will not let you hit.”
- “Hands down. I am here.”
- “Show me: space or help?”
Child can say
- “Stop.”
- “My turn.”
- “Help me.”
Step 3 — Practice when calm
- 1. I Do — Parent models: Model open hands and say, “Stop. I need help.”
- 2. We Do — Practice together: Practice the words while pushing safely against a pillow.
- 3. You Do — Child tries: Your child uses one line before their hands take over.
