Caregiver Motivation

I’m Overstimulated

TV playing.

Step 1. What's happening

Caregiver…

TV playing.

Somebody asking a question.

Another child calling your name.

Phone ringing.

Something beeping.

Somebody touching you.

And suddenly you’re thinking:

“EVERYBODY PLEASE STOP!”

Sometimes you’re not angry.

You’re overloaded.

Step 2. Behavior clues

Psalm 46:10 KJV says:

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

Sometimes stillness isn’t laziness.

Sometimes stillness is exactly what your nervous system needs.

Step 3. Watch before you react

  1. REDUCE IT

Turn something down.

TV.

Music.

Notifications.

Whatever doesn’t need to be making noise right now.

  1. SAY IT

Try:

“I hear you. Give me one minute so I can answer calmly.”

  1. RESET

Relax your jaw.

Drop your shoulders.

Slow your breathing.

Then respond.

Step 4. STOP → BREATHE → SAY WHAT THEY NEED

STOP — Pause before you react.

BREATHE — One slow breath. Count to five.

SAY — “I’m going to take a minute, then try again.”

Step 5. I DO → WE DO → YOU DO

  1. I Do — Show it first: model “Reduce It” out loud so your family can see it.
  1. We Do — Practice “Say It” together in a calm moment.
  1. You Do — Try “Reset” on your own today. Notice what changes.

Step 6. Try this tonight

  1. Today, practice: Reduce It.
  1. Today, practice: Say It.
  1. Today, practice: Reset.

Caregiver…

Your body gives clues too.

If every sound suddenly feels too loud—

don’t wait until you explode to listen.

Sometimes the behavior we need to read first…

is our own.

💜 Before we stress, let’s assess.

Spot the clue. Know what to do.
