Caregiver Motivation
Why Do I Feel Guilty for Resting?
The minute you finally sit down, your brain lists everything you should be doing. Even Jesus said: rest a while.
Step 1. What's happening
Caregiver…
Why is it that the minute we finally sit down…
our brain starts listing everything we should be doing?
The dishes.
The laundry.
The emails.
The kids.
The business.
Something always needs attention.
Step 2. Behavior clues
But Mark 6:31 KJV says:
“Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while.”
Even Jesus told His disciples:
Rest a while.
So why do we act like exhaustion is proof we’re doing enough?
Step 3. Watch before you react
- NOTICE
Notice when your body starts saying:
“I’ve had enough.”
- PERMIT
Give yourself a few quiet minutes without explaining or apologizing.
- RETURN
Then come back to what matters with a little more capacity.
Step 4. STOP → BREATHE → SAY WHAT THEY NEED
STOP — Stop the guilt spiral before it starts.
BREATHE — Take one slow breath and let your shoulders drop.
SAY — “Rest is not quitting. Rest is refilling.”
Step 5. I DO → WE DO → YOU DO
- I Do — Let them see you sit down without apologizing. You are showing them rest is allowed.
- We Do — Take a quiet few minutes together. No screens, no tasks. Just breathe.
- You Do — Later, ask them: “What helps you rest?” Let them practice naming it.
Step 6. Try this tonight
- Today, sit down for five minutes on purpose. Set a timer if you need permission.
- When the guilt list starts, say out loud: “Rest is refilling.”
- Tonight, notice one thing that went better because you rested first.
Rest isn’t quitting.
Rest is refilling.
Caregiver…
You don’t have to run yourself empty to prove you love your family.
Sometimes the next right thing…
is sitting down.
💜 Before we stress, let’s assess.
